What is the Red River and Why Does it Have a Red Hue?
Let’s first discuss what the Río Rojo is and why it has that reddish tone, making it a true phenomenon in the Cusco region of Peru.
Where is the Río Rojo Located?
The Red River is located in the Cusco region, specifically in the Canchis province, Pitumarca district, along the route to the Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca and Wilcacunca. It is situated about 80 kilometers from the Inca city of Cusco, at an altitude of 4,200 meters above sea level.
The Name of the River and its Source
The river is known as Puka Mayo or Yawar Mayo from Lambramani, and it connects with the Vilcanota River. This river originates from an underground water source, also known as a spring.
Distance and Length of the River
The length of this river is approximately 2.84 kilometers, or about 9,316 feet.
The River and Its Characteristics
Typically, the river has a crystal-clear green hue like most rivers surrounding the Vilcanota. However, you might wonder why it’s called the Red River or Río Rojo if it doesn’t actually appear red. The reddish tone is due to the presence of a valley rich in iron oxide and quartz minerals, which create a reddish landscape. We are, in fact, referring to the Red Valley, the closest tourist attraction to the river.
How Does This Coloration Effect Occur?
This effect is produced due to natural causes, such as rain, which carries and directs the minerals from the Red Valley through streams to the Lambramani River. Once these minerals reach the river, they combine, producing the reddish effect that often resembles a river of blood. This natural phenomenon can be observed during the rainy season, but it can also be a bit dangerous due to storms and rising water levels.
The Ideal Season to Appreciate This Wonder
Witnessing this impressive occurrence can be quite a challenge, as we must face obstacles such as rising river levels and thunderstorms. The best time to appreciate this natural spectacle is during the rainy season, which runs from November to April. Unfortunately, it is not possible to see it during the dry season.
The River’s Fauna
During the dry season, you will usually find fish in the river that are not visible to the naked eye, which are the main inhabitants of the river. But what happens to them when this natural phenomenon causes the river to change to a reddish color? When the river changes color due to the influx of minerals like iron oxide, fish may react in various ways. Some fish can adapt to the changes and continue living in the colored water, while others may feel threatened or stressed by the alterations in their habitat.
The change in water color can also affect their ability to detect potential threats or predators, making it harder to find food. This may cause fish to relocate to less affected areas of the river or seek refuge in areas with better water quality.
How to Get to the Red River?
If you’ve decided to visit the Red River, you can do so on your own or, preferably, by booking a private tour. You might wonder why a private tour is recommended. Let me explain: you don’t need to pay just to visit the Río Rojo. If you opt for a private tour, you have three options: visit the Red Valley, the Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca, or Wilcacunca Rainbow Mountain. With any of these three options, you’ll be able to see the Red River and admire it. As I mentioned earlier, the river is located along the route to these three fabulous attractions, plus you can customize the tour to suit your preferences.
Note:
There is also the possibility of joining a group tour, but it is not recommended. Most group tours can be crowded, and the timing may not work for everyone wanting to witness this fabulous spectacle.
Tips for Your Visit
Check the Weather in Advance:
Don’t forget to ask a day before your visit. Consult local guides or information centers about the weather conditions and forecasts. Specifically, inquire about the possibility of rain and storms in the area. For example, you could ask: “What is the expected weather tomorrow at the Río Rojo or Valle Rojo? Are there any storm alerts?”
Plan Your Visit:
Consider visiting the river in the morning, as storms typically form in the afternoons, starting around 11 a.m. to noon.
Appropriate Gear:
Bring waterproof clothing and suitable footwear for wet terrain. Also, don’t forget to pack a rain poncho and a waterproof backpack to protect your belongings.

If it starts to rain heavily or you hear thunder more than twice, seek immediate shelter in a safe place, such as a cabin.
