Rainbow Mountain 2-Day Hiking Tour, Peru
Slow Down, Look Up, and Experience the Andes Differently
Our Rainbow Mountain 2-day hiking tour is a guided overnight adventure from Cusco that combines high-altitude hiking, mountain camping and a sunrise visit to Rainbow Mountain. Following quieter trails through the Ausangate region, this experience takes you beyond the standard day trip, giving you more time to explore the Peruvian Andes while enjoying spectacular scenery, expert local guidance and an unforgettable night beneath one of the clearest skies in South America.
At Rainbow Mountain Expeditions, we designed this tour for travellers who want more than a quick visit. Instead of arriving, taking a few photographs and heading back to Cusco, you’ll spend two days discovering remote valleys, crossing high mountain passes, meeting local communities and camping in one of Peru’s most remarkable landscapes. The destination is extraordinary, but it’s everything along the way that makes this journey truly special.
Why Choose the Two-Day Experience?
There are plenty of ways to visit Rainbow Mountain. This one allows you to slow down and truly experience it.
Our overnight Rainbow Mountain tour follows quieter sections of the Ausangate region, away from the busiest routes. Instead of spending most of your day travelling, you’ll have time to appreciate the changing landscapes, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the high Andes and experience mountain camping beneath an extraordinary night sky.
The rewards aren’t limited to Rainbow Mountain itself. Along the route you’ll encounter snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes, grazing alpacas and wide open valleys where the silence is broken only by the wind and the occasional call of local wildlife.
Why travellers love this experience:
- Smaller crowds and quieter hiking trails
- One night camping in the heart of the Andes
- Incredible views of Ausangate Mountain
- Opportunities to visit Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley
- More time to enjoy the journey, not just the destination
It’s a tour that reminds you the best memories often happen between the famous landmarks.
Your Journey Through the Andes
Our 2-day Peru tour begins before sunrise as we leave Cusco behind and travel towards the foothills of Ausangate, Peru’s highest sacred mountain.
As daylight spreads across the valleys, the scenery gradually changes. Rolling farmland gives way to rugged mountain landscapes where herds of alpacas graze peacefully and glaciers dominate the horizon. Before setting off on foot, you’ll enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast while your guide explains the route, answers questions and makes sure everyone is ready for the adventure ahead.
The trail soon leaves the road behind, replacing traffic with winding mountain paths, rushing streams and spectacular panoramic views. Every section reveals another reason this region remains one of Peru’s best-kept secrets.
Day One: Into the Ausangate Highlands
The first day introduces you to the dramatic beauty of the Andes at a comfortable pace while gradually gaining altitude.
One of the day’s highlights is crossing the impressive Pucacocha Pass, where sweeping views stretch across turquoise mountain lakes and the towering snow-covered slopes of Ausangate. It’s a challenging climb, but the reward is more than worth the effort. Take a moment to catch your breath and you’ll quickly realise the mountains have a habit of putting everyday worries into perspective.
After a well-earned lunch surrounded by unforgettable scenery, the trail continues through peaceful valleys towards your campsite at Anata.
As evening arrives, the mountains become wonderfully quiet. While dinner is freshly prepared, there’s time to relax with a warm drink, share stories with fellow travellers or simply enjoy the stillness that makes this part of Peru feel so remote.
Then comes one of the tour’s most memorable moments.
When darkness settles across the Andes, the sky comes alive. With almost no light pollution, countless stars appear overhead and, on clear nights, the Milky Way stretches across the sky in extraordinary detail. It’s a reminder that some of the finest views on this journey aren’t found on the trail at all.
You’ll spend the night camping beneath the mountains, ready for an exciting second day.
Day Two: Sunrise, Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley
The day begins before sunrise with a warm cup of coca tea delivered to your tent, followed by a hearty breakfast as the first light reaches the surrounding peaks. It’s an early start, but few mornings are rewarded with scenery quite like this.
As you continue hiking, anticipation builds with every step until Rainbow Mountain finally comes into view. The colourful mineral bands that have made Vinicunca famous appear even more striking after earning your way there on foot. Surrounded by sweeping Andean landscapes and towering snow-capped peaks, you’ll have plenty of time to take photographs, enjoy the panoramic views and appreciate one of Peru’s most remarkable natural wonders.
The adventure doesn’t end there. The route continues towards the spectacular Red Valley, a quieter and often overlooked landscape where deep crimson hills create a dramatic contrast against the surrounding mountains. After exploring the area, you’ll descend for a well-earned lunch before travelling back to Cusco, arriving in the late afternoon with unforgettable memories and, quite possibly, a camera full of photos you’ll struggle to narrow down.
Is This Tour Right for You?
Our 2-day tour is designed for travellers who enjoy hiking and want a more immersive experience than a standard day trip. While no technical climbing is involved, you’ll be walking at high altitude across mountain trails, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
Because much of the tour takes place above 4,500 metres, we strongly recommend spending at least two or three days in Cusco before your departure. Taking time to acclimatise helps your body adjust to the altitude and makes the experience far more enjoyable.

How difficult is the Rainbow Mountain 2-day hiking tour?
Our Rainbow Mountain 2-day hiking tour is considered challenging because of the high altitude rather than the technical difficulty of the trails. A good level of fitness and a steady walking pace are recommended, and spending a few days acclimatising in Cusco beforehand will help you enjoy the tour much more comfortably.
Why choose a 2-day Peru tour instead of a day tour?
A 2-day Peru tour allows you to experience far more of the Andes than a standard day trip. You’ll explore quieter trails, camp beneath spectacular mountain skies and enjoy a more relaxed pace, giving you time to appreciate the scenery rather than simply travelling to and from Rainbow Mountain.
Do I need previous camping experience?
No. This tour is suitable for first-time campers as well as experienced hikers. Rainbow Mountain Expeditions provides the camping equipment and support throughout the journey, allowing you to enjoy the experience without needing specialist outdoor skills.
Is altitude sickness something I should be concerned about?
Rainbow Mountain sits above 5,000 metres, so altitude is an important consideration for every visitor. We recommend spending at least two or three days in Cusco before your tour, staying well hydrated and taking things at a comfortable pace to help your body adjust naturally.
When is the best time to do the overnight Rainbow Mountain tour?
The dry season, generally between May and August, usually provides the clearest skies and the best hiking conditions. That said, our overnight Rainbow Mountain tour operates throughout the year, and every season offers its own unique scenery and atmosphere.
