How to Make the Most of Your Day at the Humantay Lagoon

Humantay Lake is one of the must-see attractions in Cusco. It’s a strikingly turquoise treasure nestled among the snow-capped mountains of the Andes, with plenty of Incan history.
While the destination more than makes up for the trekking tour, you might enjoy the former better with the following precautions.
Stay Warm
Even though the Humantay trek is an arduous one, the mornings can be unerringly cold. Thus, you might want to wear plenty of layers, including:
- A full-sleeve top.
- At least two items of outerwear with varying degrees of warmth.
- A wide-brimmed hat to shield against the scorching sun.
- A blanket
The blanket is for your mid-trek naps, but the rest provide sufficient protection on a sunny or overcast day.
Sleep Well
A good night’s rest should make the journey all the more enjoyable. Since pick-up hours can be brutal, ranging in the wee hours of the morning, anything less than seven hours of sleep the night before can make the hike feel like a chore.
This applies even more to those who aren’t regular hikers. They’ll need all the help they can get by sleeping well, to maintain a modicum of fitness on the lake trek.

The higher you go, the more likely you are to get exposed to radiation, wide-brimmed hat notwithstanding. Keep your hat on and apply sunscreen before going under the wide-open skies of the Andes.
You should also protect your eyes by wearing shades because you’re unlikely to find any in the mountains and bring medicine for motion sickness and altitude sickness.
Pack Snacks and Liquids
As previously mentioned, the pick-up times may range in the wee hours of the morning. In other words: well before breakfast time. Therefore, you should pack loads of snacks, such as granola bars, cookies, crackers, nuts, and the odd banana.
Liquids might seem like no-brainers, but many trekkers forget to bring anything other than water. Be sure to pack an energy or fruit drink to stay hydrated and energetic during the uphill battle.
