Just let us know ahead of time so we can have everything ready and perfectly organized.

Rainbow Mountain + Puno Tour Overview

  • Tour Start: Our adventure begins bright and early at 3:00 a.m. in the magical imperial city of Cusco. But don’t worry — you won’t have to lift a finger: we’ll pick you up right at your hotel, ready to head out to the impressive Rainbow Mountain.
  • Tour End: After a day full of exciting adventures, the tour concludes in the charming city of Puno, known for its rich folklore and its proximity to Lake Titicaca. We’ll arrive between 6 and 7 p.m., and of course, we’ll drop you off at your hotel.

Location of the Two Destinations

  • Rainbow Mountain: The famous Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain is located in the Peruvian Andes, at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters (about 17,060 feet) above sea level.
  • Puno is located at around 3,827 meters (12,556 feet) above sea level, right on the edge of the iconic Lake Titicaca.

Estimated Travel Times: Cusco – Rainbow Mountain – Puno

  • Cusco to Rainbow Mountain: The bus ride takes about 4 hours one way. The road is mostly paved, though the final stretch is on a rural dirt road.
  • Rainbow Mountain to Puno: After the visit, the drive to Puno takes roughly 6 hours. It’s a long but direct journey — perfect for a post-hike rest.

Main Tour Activity

  • Hiking: To reach the famous Rainbow Mountain, you’ll need to hike for about 2 hours each way, totaling around 4 hours. Alternatively, you can rent a horse — great options for shortening the journey.
  • Hiking Difficulty: The route to Vinicunca includes steep sections and a final ascent to the summit of Rainbow Mountain, which can be a bit challenging.

Attractions to Visit on the Route from Cusco to Puno

Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca): This spectacular mountain, also known as Winikunka or Vinicunca, has captured the world’s attention, drawing over 2,000 visitors each day. Its stunning, rainbow-like colors are the result of mineral layers formed over millions of years and exposed by erosion from wind, rain, and sun. (Access to the mountain requires an entrance fee of 25 soles, approximately $7 USD.)

Lake Titicaca: Although the tour does not include a direct visit to Lake Titicaca, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the lake during the bus ride and get a sense of its vastness. Once in Puno, you’re free to explore the lake on your own — local agencies offer boat trips and guided tours.

Discover Puno: Beyond Lake Titicaca and the Uros Floating Islands, your visit to Puno won’t be limited to just these two magnificent spots. Puno invites you to connect with its rich historical past.

Cultural and Natural Experiences: Visit local communities to learn about their way of life and ancestral traditions. Discover local crafts — a reflection of centuries of artistic skill passed down through generations.

Our Recommendation: Don’t miss a visit to the Uros Floating Islands, located on the same lake, just a 30-minute boat ride from the port of Puno. It’s a one-of-a-kind cultural experience and very easy to arrange once you’re in the city.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Rainbow Mountain and Puno?

The driest and most stable weather in the Andes happens between May and August, making it the perfect time for this tour. During these months, the weather is typically more stable, with clear skies and pleasant daytime temperatures — perfect for enjoying the scenery both at Rainbow Mountain and in the city of Puno.

However, keep in mind that Rainbow Mountain sits at 5,200 meters (17,060 feet) above sea level, and weather at that altitude can change quickly. Even in the middle of the dry season, sudden rain or snowfall is possible — so don’t get too confident. It’s essential to wear warm, layered, waterproof clothing, and bring sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat), as UV radiation at high altitudes is also intense.

Weather in Cusco, Rainbow Mountain, and Puno

Cusco: The weather in Cusco is usually mild in the mornings, though occasional rain can occur.

Rainbow Mountain: The weather at Rainbow Mountain is highly unpredictable and can change quickly. At any given moment, it might be sunny, rainy, or even snowing. Most of the time, it tends to be cloudy with occasional sunny breaks. Temperatures are cool, with winds and air temps ranging between 10°C and 12°C (50°F to 54°F).

Puno’s weather, like Cusco’s, can be a bit unpredictable—sunny one moment, cloudy the next. While most days are calm with only light drizzles, the afternoons tend to get noticeably chilly.

Stops During the Trip to Puno

We know the journey can be long, so don’t worry — we’ve planned everything to make it enjoyable. Along the way, we’ll make a few strategic stops that are both practical and enjoyable.

These breaks give you a chance to stretch your legs, use the restroom, breathe in some fresh mountain air, and of course, snap some amazing photos of the Andean landscape. At certain points, you’ll also find small stands selling local crafts and souvenirs — perfect for taking a little piece of the experience home with you.

The idea is to make the ride feel like part of the adventure, not just a transfer. After all, you’ll be crossing one of the highest and most breathtaking stretches of the Peruvian Andes.
